Where did you find the inspiration to write this rather brilliant book?
My goal then, as it is now, was to have people read my essays, and feel better about their day. If I can make them laugh or smile even better. I love the sound of real laughter and the brightness of smiles, especially if I caused it to happen because of my book.
How long did it take for you to write Why Men Are Suspicious of Yoga And Other Very, Very Funny Stories and what was one of the challenges you faced while writing it?
I was the humor columnist for a group of Gatehouse papers for five-years. The paper published my articles once a month. After I left the paper, Esther, my wife, said given all these pieces you wrote, plus others, you have a book here. It took about five -years, but that was due to the limitations I had with the newspapers.
You are particularly gifted at finding the humor in almost all situations, especially those some may call dark. Has this always been the case?
I needed to find reason to smile and laugh in many difficult situations.
There are 55 stories in your book. Do you have a favorite story?
They are like my kids: I like them all, but other’s favorites are: HARVEY’Y MOTHER’S FUNERAL AND THE SUNDAY MORNING TENNIS GAME, BROTHERS, THE RED JACKET, STILL PERPLEXED AFTER ALL THESE YEARS AND FOUL WEATHER FRIENDS.
I hear you have a sequel in the works can you tell us a bit about it? And when will it be ready to print?
My new book is about coming to N.Y.C from Boston in the early Sixties, when I was in my early twenties. I also will add a few essays at the end that were written after Why Men got published. My second book will be finished in less than a year.
