The Liberal Democrats have announced their list candidates for next year’s London Assembly elections. The party currently has two Assembly Members but is hoping to make gains following big wins in the local elections this month.
The Liberal Democrats gained over 400 council seats across the country, including big victories in the capital’s commuter belt. The party won councils which border London, including Elmbridge, Surrey Heath, Windsor and more. The victories were mostly at the expense of the Conservative party, yet Labour voters also switched to the Liberal Democrats in the North of England.
The Liberal Democrats are building momentum in London, having moved forward in areas such as Merton in last year’s elections. There is hope the party can now gain a third Assembly seat in next year’s elections.
The Liberal Democrats candidate list for next year’s London Assembly is:
Cllr Hina Bokhari AM
Rob Blackie
Cllr Irina von Wiese
Cllr Gareth Roberts
Chris Maines
Cllr John Sweeney
William Houngbo
Michael Bukola
Chris Annous
Kishan Devani
Sue Wixley
Caroline Pidgeon AM, who is stepping down at the next election after 16 years as an Assembly Member, said:
“We have a fantastic list of candidates who will represent London and all Londoners.
“Our candidates are leaders in their fields, who have a wealth of experience, and will bang the drum for Londoners as we face the NHS and Cost Of Living crises.
“Hina Bokhari is a sitting Assembly Member who has been challenging the Mayor at City Hall on fire resilience and emergency planning.
“Rob Blackie helped launch the anti-Brexit ‘Best for Britain’ campaign, and has advised biotech companies who are creating anti-cancer vaccines.
“Irina von Wiese was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for London in 2019 and Gareth Roberts is the Leader of Richmond Council.
“The local election results show the Lib Dems are a force to be reckoned with, and that we’re the team who will stand up for local residents and deliver change that people want to see.
“For too long the Conservatives have taken London for granted, and Labour are abandoning London to protect their northern red walls.”
