Lime, the world’s largest provider of shared electric scooters and bikes, is launching its Lime Commuter Club for Londoners this March. The new club will bring together London’s growing cycling community to ride to the office, while making friends and building confidence and knowledge of city cycling rules.
The launch comes as new research from Lime* reveals that Londoners are increasingly choosing to commute on two wheels, with one in three (36%) of the Capital’s residents having now commuted by rental e-bike. The younger generation is even more inclined to cycle for their commute as 81% of Gen Z (age 13- 28) said they have used a rental e-bike to get to work.
Almost half (48%) of those polled say walking or cycling is their preferred way of commuting. It’s no surprise that more Londoners are opting to cycle to work, as over a quarter (28%) say they feel happier when they spend time outdoors as part of their journey. This sentiment bodes well for the Mayor of London’s Active Travel Goals, for all Londoners to do at least 20 minutes of active travel each day by 2041**.
This upward trend shows no signs of slowing, as over a fifth (23%) of Londoners want to commute more by bike in 2025. Cycling has become both more popular and accessible since the introduction of rental e-bikes in the city, with a third of Londoners (34%) saying they are cycling more since they arrived. In fact, there were 16 million Lime commutes taken in 2024 alone, with total Lime e-bike journeys up by 85% annually last year.
TOP TEN REASONS PEOPLE CYCLE AS PART OF THEIR COMMUTE
It is more cost-effective
It helps keep me healthy and active
It gets me to work faster
It is more efficient
It allows me to enjoy the fresh air outdoors
It is less crowded/busy
It helps me start my day with movement
It helps clear my head before work
It improves my mental state
I am more productive when I get to my desk
For those who haven’t yet taken the step to become a regular cycle commuter, trust in their cycling skills is cited as a key barrier, with Londoners claiming they would cycle to work more if they learned safe cycling routes (36%), had more confidence in their abilities (32%) and a better understanding of the city’s cycling rules and etiquette (31%).
As well as this, a third (36%) of Londoners admit that they would cycle to work more often if they had someone to cycle with. This comes as outdoor community clubs and social activities continue to grow in popularity with Londoners as a way to build social connection: 61% of respondents say they have participated in social outdoor group activities, while 45% claim it helps them make friends with similar interests and a third (33%) have revealed they make them feel part of a community.
As a result, Lime is bringing its community together in partnership with the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) to launch the Lime Commuter Club – the city’s first-ever cycle commute group. The Lime Commuter Club will launch with two events, starting from London Fields and ending in Holborn on Thursday 6th and Thursday 13th March. Participants will be able to meet and chat with other Limers, pick up free limited-edition merch, and enjoy a complimentary hot drink before getting a cycle safety refresher, and setting off to work in a guided group led by LCC along one of London’s cycle superhighways.
Hal Stevenson, Director of Policy for UK & Ireland at Lime, says: “We are seeing record demand for Lime bikes, especially during commuting hours, and this looks set to increase further in 2025. We want to help those who already cycle to work feel empowered to do so more, as well as improve new riders’ confidence on the roads during rush hour.
“Getting outside as part of your daily routine is great for mental well-being, and community initiatives like run clubs are booming in London thanks to the social connections they provide. The Lime Commuter Club taps into this all, bringing together the city’s growing Lime commuter community, while encouraging positive, and safe cycling behaviours as we head into spring.
“We’re proud to partner with the London Cycling Campaign on this initiative and hope it’ll help even more Londoners to make cycling part of their morning routine.”
