Through a year-long initiative, housebuilder and construction company Durkan has raised £10,000 for St Luke’s Church in Peckham.
Working with St Luke’s, Durkan has raised the money by asking its contractors to use the church’s property for parking, and donating to a scheme each time they do. Durkan is building new homes on Commercial Way near the church, on behalf of Southwark Council.
At a recent event at the site on Commercial Way, with Southwark Council councillors in attendance, Durkan has handed over the money raised to St Luke’s.
As well as providing significant new income for the church, the parking initiative has also helped to ease congestion locally.
Reverend Sandra Schloss, Vicar of St Luke’s Church, said: “It has been great working with Durkan to raise the £10,000. The funds for the church will help us cover the costs of new chairs we are planning to buy for our hall. The current chairs are in urgent need of repair, so we are grateful for this. I would also like to thank the Durkan team for being so generous, polite and helpful. It has been a pleasure working together to raise the money.”
Vlad Gryniv, Project Manager at Durkan, added: “We take pride in making meaningful contributions to the communities we work in. At Commercial Way, we set ourselves the target of raising £10,000 through this parking scheme, and it’s brilliant to have achieved it.”
“Throughout our project, St Luke’s has been really accommodating and we appreciate their continued support as we work to provide new high-quality and affordable homes in Peckham. We’re looking forward to seeing the new chairs in place at the church.”
Durkan’s work on behalf of Southwark Council began in 2020. In total, 109 new homes are being built including 74 for council rent, 35 other genuinely affordable homes, and eight with wheelchair access. As well as the new homes, a new children’s play area is being created at the site.
Four accommodation blocks have been completed so far, and construction and landscaping work continues to make good progress. The team is ahead of schedule and expects to complete work at the site in June 2023.
