The All England Lawn Tennis Club last week welcomed more than 150 local children and adults to Canons House in Mitcham for two days of Wimbledon-themed games and activities during the school half term break.
Local families from Mitcham and Morden visited Canons House on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October for the free event. They enjoyed garden games, including miniature croquet and lawn tennis; creating Wimbledon-themed crafts; taking photos with replica trophies in front of a Centre Court backdrop; and meeting special guest Rufus the Hawk, who famously patrols the skies around Wimbledon each year.
Several Merton councillors visited during the two days, including Mayor Joan Henry, Deputy Mayor Agatha Mary Akyigyina, Cabinet Member for Sport and Heritage, Caroline Cooper-Marbiah, as well as local ward councillors.
Ulrika Högberg, the All England Club’s Head of Community Strategy, said: “We were delighted to bring a little slice of Wimbledon to the magnificently restored Canons House for the local community to enjoy. We had a great couple of days and we’re really looking forward to hosting more events in the future both in Mitcham and across the Boroughs of Merton and Wandsworth.”
