London Councils stand ready to work alongside the new Prime Minister to meet the urgent challenges our capital faces. Boroughs have been on the frontline of the Covid response and they are already working to protect communities facing a cost-of-living crisis and taking long-term action to insulate homes.
The cross party group welcomes the Prime Minister’s recognition of London’s pivotal role in the levelling up agenda and invites her to work alongside London boroughs.
Boroughs also highlight the urgent need to help low-income households through worsening cost-of-living pressures and to ensure financial stability for the local public services that London’s communities rely on.
Cllr Georgia Gould, Chair of London Councils, said:
“Like the rest of the country, London is struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and skyrocketing inflation. Low-income households are under massive strain and public services are seeing their budgets squeezed dramatically. London boroughs stand ready to work with the new Prime Minister to take swift action and offer further support to our residents.
“As the Prime Minister acknowledged during the leadership contest, London makes a vital contribution but also faces deep pressures and inequalities. We hope the Prime Minister will work alongside us to make sure that London plays a key role in the levelling up agenda and all London’s communities benefit from growth in the capital.
“From the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine through to reducing rough sleeping, London boroughs have worked with the government to serve our communities. We are determined to see this spirit of partnership continue across every level of government. We remain ambitious and optimistic for London and determined to unlock the creativity and dynamism of our city to solve the challenges ahead.”
