London City Airport has donated over £500,000 to local charities and not-for-profit organisations through its annual Community Fund since 2019.
The successful applicants for the first tranche of funding from its annual £75,000 Community Fund have today been confirmed.
The airport has awarded £48,165 of funding to 17 charities and not-for-profit organisations covering six east London boroughs including Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Newham, Southwark, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets. Each successful applicant will receive a grant of up to £3,000 to build stronger, safer, and healthier communities, and raise the aspirations of east Londoners.
Local groups that have secured funding include Newham All Star Sports Academy (NASSA), which provides sports and educational opportunities to young people; Pioneer Theatres in Stratford East, which is supporting young technicians into helping to produce stage performances; and Thames Reach Charity, which supports homeless individuals with housing, employment support, and rehabilitation.
In addition, the Community Fund is helping to support Bow Foodbank, which provides emergency food supplies to those who are in crisis due to financial difficulties; a local group providing support and advocacy for refugees, migrants, and vulnerable individuals; Motherly Love, a project supporting mothers in East London experiencing the emotional challenges that stem from the transition into parenthood; and much more.
Since launching the fund in May 2019, the Community Fund has awarded over £520,000 to 165+ charities and not-for-profit organisations.
Michael Spiers, Chief People Officer, London City Airport, said: “We’re proud to support such a diverse range of charities and organisations that are doing remarkable work to build stronger, safer, and healthier communities.
Natasha Hart MBE, CEO of NASSA, said: “We at NASSA are grateful and want to thank London City Airport for the funding. For each young person that NASSA supports, we are also helping their family, friends, peers and the community they live in. NASSA will be celebrating 20 years this year, working and delivering a variety of sports and mentoring successful projects in Newham and east London for young people.”
