Judith Kerr Primary School (JKPS) in Herne Hill, part of Anthem Schools Trust, is delighted to have been chosen to welcome Ms Elke Büdenbender, the German President’s wife, later this week.
Ms Büdenbender is accompanying the President of the Federal Republic of Germany on his State Visit to the United Kingdom, hosted at Windsor Castle by His Majesty the King, from Wednesday 3 December to Friday 5 December.
On Wednesday afternoon, Ms Büdenbender will visit Judith Kerr Primary in Herne Hill, south London. Judith Kerr Primary, which is named after the German-born author of the children’s book The Tiger Who Came to Tea, offers high quality German language teaching from Nursery to Year 6.
Ms Büdenbender will have tea with some of the pupils, visit an after-school club and will enjoy some singing in German from the school choir.
At Judith Kerr Primary, staff aim to provide up to two hours of language teaching and their German language lessons are streamed into two groups: those that can already speak German and those who are learning it as an additional language.
The school has several members of staff who speak German. German language and culture are celebrated throughout the year through assemblies, learning and singing songs in German, and recognition of key German cultural events.
Patrick Murphy, Headteacher at Judith Kerr Primary School, said: “We are immensely proud to have been chosen to host Ms Büdenbender later this week and to introduce her to our unique school community.
“It will be a great privilege to showcase what we do here at Judith Kerr to keep language learning alive and to break down cultural differences.
“We hope that Frau Büdenbender will enjoy her time with us as our countries extend this hand of friendship towards each other.”
David Hatchett, Chief Executive of Anthem Schools Trust, said: “Everyone at Judith Kerr Primary School is looking forward to welcoming Ms Büdenbender. Her visit stands as a testament to the values we uphold, and we will be delighted to showcase the vibrant energy that makes this school such a special place.”
