IN HONOUR of Black History month, international street food specialist, Market Place has joined forces with world renowned afrobeat musician Dele Sosimi, for a celebration of the iconic sounds of legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti.
The Market Place ‘Felabration’ will take place on Sunday 15 October from 5.00pm – 11.00pm, and will play homage to the life and times of a musician whose work pioneered the early inceptions of the afrobeat movement.
Widely regarded as the King of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti’s timeless songs combine West African music with funk and jazz to create a sound which has gone on to inspire generation after generation.
Hackney born Dele Sosimi first shot to fame when he joined Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 collective in 1979, where he performed with the band until 1986. He then joined forces with Fela Kuti’s oldest son Femi Kuti to create the band Positive Force which he performed with from 1986 to 1994.
During the free event, music lovers will be immersed in the spellbinding sounds which have cemented Fela Kuti’s name in the hearts and minds of millions. There will also be a screening of ‘Finding Fela’ and a two-hour long quartet performance by Dele Sosimi, along with a Q&A.
Meanwhile, a delicious offering of food will be available from the venue’s ten street food traders, which include the likes of Nigerian street food experts Suya & Lobster, BBC’s Million Pound Menu winners Baba Gs, Thai street food specialists KraPow, slow roasted duck connoisseurs Duck Shed, and artisan donut brand DUM DUM. There will also be thirst-quenching drinks options from the bar.
Since its launch Market Place Peckham has made a name for itself as the go-to destination for eclectic events that offer something for everyone, including live music performances, DJ nights, sports, film screenings and more.
