North Woolwich library –a favourite for local residents is now back in business – after a
£500,000 refurbishment and improvements by Newham Council.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz officially re opened the library with a ribbon cutting alongside local
people who toured the library’s new space and facilities.

The library on Pier Parade E16 has been closed for building work and was due to open in
January 2021 but was then subject to opening restrictions due to the Covid -19 pandemic.

Now the expanded library has opened its doors once more to a new generation of families
eager to read, learn and take part in the wealth of activities at the library including
Community Coffee mornings, Book Clubs and Coding Clubs.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said:
“Libraries are a crucial resource for the people of the Borough and fire the imagination by
encouraging reading and learning. It’s also an important hub for information around council support for jobs , training opportunities and digital skills. This is why the council has invested in North Woolwich library, to protect it as a crucial community asset for generations to come. I’m really proud of the fantastic library service in Newham and it’s a delight to see the excitement on the faces of people eager to use this library as it comes back to life.”

The library has been closed since December 2019 for a major refurbishment, the first for
many years.

As well as expansion of the library space, there is also now a community room, named after local activist, Connie Hunt, who died in 2014, after dedicating her life to fighting for the North Woolwich and Silvertown community, battling for the rights of residents. Her family attended the event (pictured below). The space will host events and can be hired by the public.

Library opening hours have also increased to provide a more expansive offer to the local
community. The library is now open on six days (Monday to Saturday) from 9.30am-5.30pm with late extended opening hours on Tuesday and Thursday to 8pm.
