Met Police have today told staff that Police Front counters will go from 37 to 19 and just 8 across the whole of London will be open 24 hours a day. We understand that officers only heard this yesterday – there were no consultations or warnings.
In West London, we understand Twickenham and Merton will lose theirs. Sutton will remain 24 hours, The nearest 24 hour counter to Richmond will be Acton, Sutton & Lambeth.
Lib Dem Assembly Member Gareth Richards slammed the decision, which has not yet been shared with the London Assembly:
“The decision to axe half of London’s police counters will come as a massive shock to many Londoners. At a time when crime, and the fear of crime, is on the rise across the capital, this not only sends the wrong message, but is yet more evidence that Sadiq Khan is failing to make the case to the Labour Government for the funding needed to keep London and Londoners safe.”
