Bus operator Metroline has acquired over 200 zero emission electric buses in 2025 for use on London networks, supported by HSBC UK funding.
Utilising eight-figure support from HSBC UK, Metroline is taking the total number of electric buses in operation in its London fleet to 422 buses.
The new electric fleet, which includes Wrightbus Electroliner buses adds to Metroline’s existing fleet of 715 hybrid and 20 hydrogen buses already in operation across London.
This is the first deal completed by HSBC UK Equipment Finance (HEF) in Singaporean Dollars, with Metroline, a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro. ComfortDelGro is a Singapore headquartered transport conglomerate with operations across 13 markets, including the UK.
Sean O’Shea, Metroline Chief Executive Officer, said:
“The introduction of these electric buses to the Metroline fleet further enables us to support Transport for London’s net-zero emission goals, while also improving air quality and customer experience across our route network. These are real, tangible benefits that our passengers will experience every day. This milestone continues our commitment to sustainability and innovation, building on our achievement as the UK’s first operator of electric double decker buses.”
Sacha Balachandran, Head & Executive Chair of HSBC UK Equipment Finance, added: “Achieving an effective energy transition takes ambition and strategic vision. ComfortDelGro clearly demonstrated these qualities throughout this process and it’s fantastic to play our part in an investment supporting sustainable travel in the capital.”
Harish Venkatesan, Head of International Mid-Market, Corporate and Institutional Banking, HSBC Singapore, said: “By combining HSBC’s global connectivity and our deep product expertise, the Singapore and UK teams delivered a seamless, end-to-end solution tailored to our client’s needs. We appreciate ComfortDelGro’s continued trust and giving us the opportunity to support their transition ambitions. We look forward to more shared successes in the years to come.”
Metroline operates 14 garages across London, with an operational fleet of over 1,400 vehicles serving over 100 routes, carrying an estimated total of 1 million people every day.
