Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has said the country should stop paying illegal migrants to remain in the UK.
Speaking on GB News Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg said:
“Illegal migrants awaiting deportation are reportedly being offered taxpayer funded art and it classes, along with free gym access library books and welfare buddies under detention scheme near Gatwick airport.
“Facilities at Brook House and Tinsley House allegedly include craft rooms, access to food and drinks around the clock and even weekly pocket money. The facilitator, Serco, insists it’s following Home Office requirements.
“But is it time we stopped paying illegal migrants to be here?
“Isn’t this important that migrants who are here illegally, of course, they should be treated decently – nobody’s saying they should live in hovels, but they’re getting better treatment than people who obey the law, pay their taxes, are here legally.
“That just seems to people to be unfair, and is, I think, making people very angry, and that’s not good for the body politic.
“ID cards won’t make any difference. They won’t make a blind bit of difference.
“Labour may squeeze the balloon here and reduce people in asylum hotels, but the balloon will expand somewhere else, because they’re going to be housed somewhere.
“It’s not deporting them, and it can’t deport them whilst we are tied into the HRA and the European Convention.
“The Human Rights Commissioner, Michael O’Flaherty, said yesterday that we weren’t acknowledging the human rights of trans people and of protesters who weren’t allowed to wear masks.
“Unfortunately, from Strasbourg, it’s getting worse, not better.
“Just to be clear, I don’t blame Serco for the stories. It’s clearly the Home Office’s problem.”
