Twelve community diagnostic centres (CDCs) are open across London with a further two opening this year, providing a range of diagnostic tests that allows patients to receive life-saving checks closer to their homes.
Nearly two million tests have been carried out in the last four years, a figure that is growing exponentially as more centres become fully operational across the capital.
NHS London medical director, Dr Chris Streather, said: “The growing number of CDCs in London is transforming the care people receive, providing quicker and more convenient access, as well as reducing pressure on our busy hospitals.
“Several of the centres are leading on cutting-edge techniques, technology and innovation in testing and diagnostics.”
Highlights include Purley Diagnostic Centre in Croydon, which has provided nearly 20,000 extra tests since opening just over a year ago.
Becky Board, director of cancer and Purley Hospital at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said: “As well as fast-tracking access to vital tests such as x-rays, CT scans and cardiology screening to help detect serious illnesses sooner, our diagnostic centre in Purley has helped prevent the worsening of existing health issues. It allows our patients receive the care they need as quickly as possible, in a place that suits them.
“Building on this success, we’re excited to be opening a second CDC in New Addington later this year, so that we can provide high-quality care to even more people.”
Other diagnostic centres across London include Ealing CDC, which opened in August last year. It is dramatically cutting waiting times, as well as preventing unnecessary hospital visits.
Barking CDC has carried out more than 25,000 scans since opening just under a year ago and aims to provide more than 50,000 scans and tests every year.
The new CDCs are:
Finchley Memorial Hospital
Wood Green
Barking Community Hospital
St George’s Hornchurch
Ealing
Wembley
Willesden
Eltham Community Hospital
Queen Mary’s, Sidcup
Kingston
Purley
Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton
CDCs are set to open in Mile End in north east London and New Addington in Croydon later this year.
