A University of Greenwich student has just celebrated a very special graduation day; one which she shared with her mother.

Connie Adams, graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science at Rochester Cathedral on Thursday morning (24 July), whilst her mother Karen studied FdSc Equine Management at our partner college, Hadlow College that very same afternoon.

The unique family milestone was a proud moment for both, marking the end of years of hard work, juggling deadlines, and encouraging one another through their studies.

Connie loved studying at Greenwich because of the custom-built laboratories specifically tailored to the needs of the course.

“As a Forensic Science student, I found it incredibly valuable to work in simulated crime scene rooms that closely mirrored real-life investigative environments. Another highlight was the support and passion of the lecturers. Their genuine enthusiasm for the subject was evident in every lecture and practical session, creating a motivating and inspiring learning environment that encouraged us as students to push ourselves and stay engaged.”

For her mother Karen returning to education after more than 40 years was a big step, having previously worked in childcare for over two decades.

“I was very nervous at first,” Karen admits. “I was extremely aware of the age difference between myself and the other students – and even some of the lecturers! But everyone was so supportive. I definitely struggled with IT to start with, but the staff and students were brilliant and really helped me find my feet.”

Connie has now secured a job with Surrey Police.

“I am responsible for maintaining the integrity and continuity of evidence. This position has provided me with valuable hands-on experience in evidence handling and has deepened my understanding of the forensic procedures I studied. Looking ahead, I am eager to continue progressing within the police force, with the long-term goal of becoming a Crime Scene Manager or working within the intelligence unit.”

Graduating on the same day as her mother has made the moment even more meaningful.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be graduating on the same day as my mum. We’ve each worked extremely hard over the past few years, and being able to celebrate this achievement together makes it even more special. Graduating alongside her is truly inspiring, she’s shown that it’s never too late to learn or to follow your passion. Watching her pursue her goals has been a powerful reminder that with perseverance, anything is possible and now she gets to do what she loves most. It’s all a bit surreal – a proudness and a sense of achievement.”
