With most Brits still planning to celebrate Easter, many families are rethinking how they spend – swapping expensive traditions for lower-cost, creative alternatives at home. New data shows that 86% of UK adults plan to celebrate Easter, with total spending reaching an estimated £1.3 billion in recent years.

However, ongoing cost pressures mean households are becoming more selective in where that money goes. UK households now spend an average of £623 per week, according to the ONS, with essentials like housing, food and energy taking up a growing share. Against this backdrop, families are looking for ways to mark Easter more affordably. Recent research from CEBR found that platforms like Temu could help UK households save nearly £3000 annually, thanks to lower prices on everything from daily essentials to seasonal products.

Rising Costs Drive a Shift to Low-Cost Easter Traditions

Easter staples are also becoming more expensive. Some popular chocolate eggs have increased in price by over 40% per 100g while shrinking in size, as rising cocoa costs impact manufacturers. This, combined with wider pressure on household budgets, is prompting families to rethink how they approach the holiday.

Money-saving expert Lynn Beattie, also known as ‘Mrs Mummypenny’, says more parents are moving away from high-cost, shop-bought traditions in favour of simple, creative activities at home.

“Families still want to make Easter special, but there’s a shift towards doing more with less. Crafting, decorating and spending time together is replacing some of the more expensive habits.”

One factor supporting this shift is the growing accessibility of low-cost craft supplies through platforms like Temu, where families can source Easter decorations, DIY kits and materials at a fraction of typical retail prices. Beattie recently shared how she created a full set of Easter crafts and decorations for around £50 using Temu – a potential saving of up to 87% compared to average seasonal spending. Egg decorating kits, wreath-making supplies, and ready-made bonnet sets help parents recreate traditional Easter experiences – without the higher price tag.

She also highlighted Temu’s local fulfilment programme, which allows some items to arrive within as little as two days – helping families avoid last-minute stress when preparing for Easter.

For many parents, the shift isn’t just financial – it’s about creating more meaningful, screen-free time together. As Beattie puts it: “Children don’t remember how much you spent – they remember what you did together. Simple things like painting eggs or making decorations are often what make the day special.”
