Nationwide trials expansion of dementia clinics across Virgin Money branches

Nationwide is bringing specialist dementia clinics to Virgin Money branches, expanding its high-street services to reach even more communities and reinforcing its longstanding commitment to keeping branches open until at least 2030.

The move builds on Nationwide’s existing network of dementia specialist nurse clinics across more than 230 branches, showing how it is using its physical presence to deliver real, face-to-face support where it’s needed most. It also follows extensive investment across more than 470 branches since 2017 with further investment planned across Nationwide and Virgin Money locations.

Twelve Virgin Money branches across the North of England and Scotland will trial clinics from May, increasing the number of branches offering dementia support to 250 across the UK.

The free clinics, held by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, forms part of Nationwide’s social impact strategy, Fairer Futures, which aims to tackle some of society’s greatest challenges – from dementia and youth homelessness to families living in poverty and supporting those affected by cancer.

Admiral Nurses can offer tailored health, care and financial guidance in person and over the phone, helping people affected by dementia, and their families and carers, access specialist support locally.

To date, more than 5,700 dementia clinic appointments have been booked since the initiative launched in 2024, demonstrating the strong demand for accessible dementia support within local communities. Northern regions have seen the highest uptake, with more than 2,900 appointments, followed by southern regions with more than 2,300. Scotland has seen more than 400 appointments booked, and the expansion aims to ensure even more people – particularly those in harder to reach areas can access the support they need.

Nationwide plans to introduce the clinics to more of Virgin Money’s 91 branches after reviewing demand.

Anyone can book an appointment, including non-Nationwide and non-Virgin Money customers, via Dementia UK website and via Nationwide Fairer Futures. The clinics will start from May in Northern England and July in Scotland.

Nationwide, working with Admiral Nurses, has also introduced the UK’s first dementia training programme – ensuring frontline colleagues are equipped with the skills and confidence to better support members affected by dementia.

Charlotte Kensett, Director of Social Impact and Customer Experience at Nationwide said: “At Nationwide we want to ensure no-once faces dementia alone so by expanding into our Virgin Money branches we hope that more people will get the support they need. Anyone impacted by dementia can visit a specialist Admiral Nurse in one of our branches or call the dementia helpline on 0800 888 6678.”

Dr Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse and Chief Executive at Dementia UK, said: “We are so pleased to be expanding our support to more families with dementia in Virgin Money branches through Nationwide’s Fairer Future’s programme. To date, the face-to-face clinics have helped thousands of people to access vital support through our specialist dementia nurses in a safe and comfortable environment. We know that Admiral Nurses are a lifeline to families with dementia, they understand the unique challenges that come with living with the condition and caring for someone with it. We look forward to continuing to deliver vital support in Virgin Money and Nationwide branches over the coming months.”

Admiral Nurses will attend the following Virgin Money branches, dates for the Scottish branches will be made available on the Dementia UK website by the end of June.
