Nearly half of mums in London do not usually even receive a gift on Mother’s Day

New research today from CollectPlus, the UK’s largest independent store-based parcel delivery and returns service, reveals the UK is a nation of crafty daughters who won’t miss a trick to impress on Mother’s Day with a handmade gift, as research shows women are three times more likely than men to make their mum a gift.

When it comes to spend, the research showed that mothers expect a gift worth at least £19.26 on Mother’s Day. However, the study shows that sons will go above and beyond to spoil their mums, with men spending an average of £36 compared to £28 by women. Perhaps this is to overcompensate for the fact that many blokes are actually a forgetful bunch, with one in six men admitting they have forgotten to buy their mother a gift on Mother’s Day five or more times. And a third of men admit they rely on their wife or partner for help, whilst 16 per cent have asked a sibling and three per cent said they even got a work colleague to purchase their Mother’s Day present.

When they do remember, flowers and chocolates were revealed as the go-to Mother’s Day gift option for both sons and daughters, with two thirds choosing them as a present for their mum, followed by perfume or a meal in a restaurant. In contrast to this, CollectPlus also revealed that Brits like to splash the cash with some offspring admitting they have gone has far as paying off their mum’s mortgage/debts or bought them a car on Mother’s Day. Almost one in six buy their Mother’s Day presents using an online click and collect service, with 43 per cent revealing they are buying online for the ease of delivery and convenience.

The research commissioned by CollectPlus, who asked of poll of 2,000 Britons, uncovered the weirdest gifts that mothers have received on Mother’s Day, with cornflakes, a hammer, a potato with a message, a scarecrow, and welding gloves topping the list of the most bizarre presents given on the special day. Perhaps unsurprisingly based on these weird presents, nearly 30 per cent of mums actually confessed to faking a smile on Mother’s Day to hide away from the fact they were not keen on their present, with four per cent admitting to throwing away their gift without their children knowing. A cheeky two per cent disclosed they have even gone as far as ‘accidentally’ breaking a gift they didn’t like as an excuse to get rid of it, and one per cent have simply said their offspring can keep the present when they didn’t want it.

However, some mothers may not even get the chance to feel disgruntled, as the research found almost half of mothers do not receive a gift for Mother’s Day at all.

Catherine Woolfe, Marketing Director of CollectPlus says “Mother’s Day is a lovely opportunity to show our appreciation to our mothers, and it is interesting to see the huge variety in presents that mothers across the nation receive from the home-made to the grand financial gestures. It’s also fascinating to see that many sons forget to buy a present or outsource buying to a sibling or in some cases their wife. Luckily though the CollectPlus Click & Collect service helps make online shopping convenient and easy, so there really should be no excuse for not ordering even a little something this Mother’s Day.”
