Fearless, the youth service of the independent charity Crimestoppers, is today launching a new campaign across Wandsworth and Richmond to encourage young people to speak up about crime – anonymously and without fear.
The targeted campaign, being run in partnership with Wandsworth & Richmond’s Community Safety Service, wants to help young people keep themselves and their friends safe in local neighbourhoods including Roehampton, Putney, Battersea, Balham, Twickenham, and Richmond Town Centre.
Last year Crimestoppers passed 1,216 anonymous reports to the Metropolitan Police about knife and weapon related crime. This campaign will not only focus on helping young people understand the consequences of carrying knives but also how to spot the signs of child exploitation and youth violence.
The social media campaign will target 13 to 17-year-olds and features real-life inspired stories such as those of Michael and Chloe. Their experiences challenge myths around knife carrying and the consequences, such as the risk of injury and facing up to five years in prison, even if the knife isn’t used.
Fearless will also work closely with local schools, youth services, and community safety partnerships to share campaign materials.
Alexa Loukas, London Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said: “Fearless is here to support young people in Wandsworth and Richmond by giving everyone a voice in the fight against crime. We know that young people and residents often have vital information but are worried about coming forward. This campaign is about empowering them to act – safely and anonymously – to help protect friends, families, and neighbourhoods.
We also want to support young people to separate the myths and facts surrounding crimes, and spot potential signs, so that they can make positive choices that help keep them safe. Fearless.org offers a completely anonymous way to share what they know and help protect their community.”
In the last year, Crimestoppers received thousands of anonymous reports from across London, leading to arrests, the removal of dangerous weapons, and safeguarding of vulnerable individuals. By working together, the Wandsworth and Richmond communities can help make a real difference.
