A new builders merchant has officially opened in Canning Town – and brought with it a £3,000 boost to the local community.
As part of its ongoing expansion around the UK, Selco Builders Warehouse has cut the ribbon on a new branch on Europa Trade Park on Cody Road, its 71st in the UK.
To mark the opening, Selco has made a £1,000 donation to community support group Amy’s Space through its Selco Stars campaign, as well as pledging a further £2,000 to the local activities of its nominated charity Global’s Make Some Noise.
Amy’s Space was selected as the winner of the Selco Stars competition, which invited community groups and charities in and around Canning Town to have the chance to win £1,000 to support their work.
Amy’s Space was founded in August 2018 by Debbie Brown and a dedicated group of volunteers to help the homeless in Newham and surrounding areas, including Canning Town.
The group, which is currently based in Tower Hamlet, has now evolved to also support anyone who is financially vulnerable with food, toiletries and ‘Back on Track’ and ‘Street Rescue’ packs. Fortnightly street feeds also take place outside Anchor House in Canning Town.
Debbie, who named the group after her daughter Amy who died in 1991, said: “I was homeless for eight years before I got a property in August 2018 and I decided to set the group up in support of those I was leaving behind. I felt guilty for those were still homeless.
“The group has grown and grown and our aim now is not only to support those who are homeless but also anyone who is financially vulnerable.
“That number has increased during the pandemic and we are constantly aiming to provide help to everyone who needs it.
“Being selected as the winner of Selco Stars will make a huge difference to the group and the communities we support and we are hugely grateful. We survive on donations and this will help us continue the invaluable work we do.”
Selco will also make a £2,000 donation to its charity partner Global’s Make Some Noise, which helps small projects that support disadvantaged people across the UK.
David Burke, branch manager at Selco Canning Town, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to open our Canning Town branch and strengthen our presence in London to further help serve tradespeople of the local area.
“Supporting charities and community groups in the local areas in which we operate is an integral part of the Selco ethos so we are delighted to mark the opening of our new branch with a £3,000 donation. We hope the funding will make a real difference to very worthy causes.”
With hundreds of trade brands always in stock, Selco’s 71 UK branches are firmly focused on helping tradespeople complete their jobs as quickly and effectively as possible.
As well as offering trade services, Selco also has a strong digital presence including Click & Deliver and Click & Collect services.
