Step inside the walls of one of Europe’s most legendary fortresses as The Last Stronghold: An Epic Medieval Adventure is set to make its UK debut in London on 12 March at the W12 Shopping Centre in Shepherd’s Bush. Created by Excurio, and the Centre des monuments nationaux, and presented by Fever, the groundbreaking virtual reality experience brings a UNESCO World Heritage Site vividly to life, transporting visitors to the heart of medieval Europe. Guests can sign up for the waitlist via Fever’s app or website.
Guests can expect to explore Carcassonne at the height of its medieval power, walking the ramparts, passing through fortified gates, taking in bustling markets and uncovering hidden spaces within the impenetrable stronghold.
Drawing on extensive historical and archaeological research, validated by experts from the Centre des monuments nationaux, The Last Stronghold meticulously recreates the city as it appeared in the early 14th century. Guided by Simon and Agnès, two characters caught between loyalty, rebellion and survival, visitors experience a pivotal moment in history shaped by royal authority and the looming shadow of the Inquisition.
Throughout the journey, guests actively engage with medieval life, from combat training and night watch on the ramparts to intimate moments inside noble residences and encounters in the city´s crowded streets.
“The Last Stronghold plunges audiences into the heart of a medieval French city where a brutal inquisition is taking place. The story is dynamic, with each scene realised with a meticulous level of immersion. It is my favourite title from Excurio within our Fever portfolio to date. The experience plays to the strengths of the VR free-roam format, which Excurio has been instrumental in shaping, allowing audiences to smell rebellion in the air as time flies by,” says Alex Winterbotham, Global Director of Production for VR at Fever.
“With The Last Stronghold, we are delivering our most ambitious immersive expedition to date—creatively, narratively, and technically. It is a great source of pride to offer the public a unique experience at the heart of this emblematic fortress, at a pivotal moment in its history,” says Fabien Barati, CEO of Excurio.
“To renew public interest in heritage, the Centre des monuments nationaux constantly seeks new ways to showcase its sites—through educational outlets (including innovative digital or audio experiences), cultural programming (such as nighttime or theatrical tours), and even remote visits of monuments. The CMN is therefore delighted to offer this unique experience to audiences who may be far from Carcassonne, providing a different and perhaps complementary way to visit the monument. This journey through time allows visitors to explore the city as it stood during its golden age. Historical facts and well-documented data leave an even stronger impression when combined with an experience that engages both the senses and emotions”, says Marie Lavandier, President of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux.
