A new plaque has been unveiled in honour of firefighter Daniel Michael O’Donovan, sixty one years after his death in the line of duty in London.

Located on the Hilldrop housing estate in Islington, the plaque marks the site at which Daniel O’Donovan was fatally injured during a lift rescue in 1964.

The plaque is part of the Fire Brigades Union’s Red Plaque project, funded by proceeds raised by the union’s Firefighters 100 Lottery.

A commemorative ceremony at the site was attended by members of Daniel’s family alongside serving and retired firefighters, on the anniversary of his death on 11 March.

Speakers included officials from the London Fire Brigade, and the Fire Brigades Union, with Daniel’s daughter Lorraine introducing the plaque before unveiling it with family members.

David Shek, Fire Brigades Union executive council members for London said:

“The Fire Brigades Union’s Red Plaque project aims to commemorate firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty across the UK, ensuring that their stories are remembered as part of the history of the places they served.

“We are proud to have unveiled a plaque in honour of Daniel Michael O’Donovan, who died during a lift rescue in 1964. His bravery and commitment to protecting the lives of others will never be forgotten.”
