Dr Chris Streather, Medical Director for the NHS in London said:
“With the arrival of the current cold weather and high rates of seasonal viruses across the capital, we are expecting London’s already busy NHS services to come under even more pressure over the coming days.
“Frontline NHS staff are working tirelessly to keep patients safe and provide them with the best possible care, but Londoners can also do their bit to help by using the most appropriate service for their need and checking in on vulnerable people.
“For general health advice, or if someone is injured or unwell but it is not a life-threatening emergency, please use the NHS 111 online service or visit your GP to get quickly directed to the most suitable service.
“Cold weather can make some health problems worse and lead to more serious complications, especially for those people over 65 or with a long-term health condition. Checking in on friends, neighbours or relatives, especially if they have existing health conditions such as breathing problems will be particularly important as temperatures continue to drop. Helping vulnerable people by ensuring they are safe, warm, and have enough food and medicine will mean they can avoid going outside during very cold weather.
“The regularly updated NHS Find a Pharmacy site also provides updates of the opening hours for local pharmacies.”
