TO HONOUR the memory of his mother who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer over seven years ago, Nimesh Maisuria, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Kilburn went from couch to 10k in just over six months.
With sponsorship donations from fellow store partners across the Central London region, Nimesh said: ‘I decided to set myself a clear goal and challenge. I’m not built for running long distances, but I really wanted to make a difference and raise some money for the wonderfully supportive Target Ovarian Cancer charity.
‘Being honest, the training has been tough and gruelling at times, but as my fitness levels have improved, I now actually quite enjoy it and indeed find it energising. Plus, the overall sense of wellbeing and purpose has made a huge difference to my mental state and focus.’
The Tottenham Ten Race and the Spurs Walk takes place annually in June in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Organised by The Engine Room, a church and community centre based in the award-winning Hale Village in the heart of Tottenham Hale, the event helps to provide a source of income for their community programme.
The 10k course will take in the Tottenham Marshes, which covers an area exceeding 100 acres and is one of the last remaining examples of semi-natural wetland in the Greater London region, and is home to many species of plants, butterflies and birds.
Embracing the outdoor life, the course also takes in the Walthamstow Wetlands, an internationally important nature reserve which provides sanctuary and shelter across its 165 hectares to a diverse range of wildlife.
Ahead of the race, Nimesh said: ‘I’m excited and now feel prepared for the 10k charity run. I feel very grateful to have received so much support from family, friends and colleagues during my training. They have helped to keep me motivated with my end goal in sight.’
To date, Nimesh has raised over £2,000 for Target Ovarian Cancer, a charity that provides support for those going through treatment for this serious condition.
