Television personality and news commentator Oli London won praise last night on Twitter after signalling support for Floridas new bill to protect women in women’s sport.
Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed SB 1028, also known as the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” The bill specifies that an athletic team or sport that is designated for females, women, or girls may not be open to students of the male sex, based on the student’s biological sex listed on the student’s official birth certificate at the time of birth.
London’s support was welcomed by the Governor of Florida’s Press Secretary and spokeswoman, Christina Pushaw, who retweeted and praised London for their support of the new law.
In a recent interview on British news channel GB News London stated “I support trans people but I think in sport you have to draw a line because they have a genetic advantage over women”. They then when on to discuss the issue of Lia Thomas, the UPENN swimmer who has sparked huge debate over women in sport after consistently ranking number one while racing against women despite being born biologically male.
London continued “In the Instance of Lia Thomas…I don’t think that was right because she won every time and there were these poor women that were being sidelined…I think it should all be about fairness”.
As the U.S. mid-term elections inch closer each day, Republicans and Democrats alike are looking for new ways to push their election campaigns. These new tactics include bringing influencers and Tiktokers onboard to encourage their audiences to vote.
London has reportedly been approached by several members of congress and senators on giving them their public endorsement in an effort tapping into their huge online audience- of over 2 Billion views on TikTok plus their regular TV appearances.
A spokesman for London declined to comment when asked about their endorsement plans.
On a scroll through their Twitter followers, London has over 30 U.S. Senators and Members of Congress following them both currently elected and seeking election this November.
