Opticians marks 18 years with store relaunch and visit from deputy mayor

AN OPTICIANS recently celebrated an incredible 18 years of service to the local community with an in-store relaunch event, which included a visit from the Deputy Mayor, following a full refurbishment.

Specsavers West Wickham marked the occasion, on Saturday 14th June, with a celebration attended by customers, team members, and the Deputy Mayor, which featured decorations, cake and gifted pizzas from the nearby Dominos.

In June 2007, Specsavers West Wickham opened its doors with just six staff and two testing rooms. Eighteen years later, it has transformed into a thriving clinic with three dedicated testing rooms, a skilled team with a combined 60 years’ expertise and an on-site
lab, allowing for faster turnaround of prescription glasses.

The newly refurbished store now features an upgraded pre-test area, new equipment in each testing room, new lighting and flooring, and sleek new frame displays.

Specsavers West Wickham has continued their commitment to the community, now offering start-of-the-art services such as OCT (optical coherence tomography) for early detection of eye conditions, MiYOSMART lenses for myopia management in children, and multifocal
contact lenses.

The team has played a central role in the store’s success. One team member has been with the store since opening, and others, including Retail Director Lindsay Mfubisha, have supported the clinic’s growth for over 11 years.

The store continues to invest in its future by supporting the development of pre-registration optometrists.

The store also remains a strong community presence, having adapted services during the pandemic, sponsored a local football team, and donated over £2,000 to fund Read Write Inc books at a local school.

Store Director Optometrist Bamini Rajasekeran said: “This event was a wonderful way to say thank you to the people who’ve supported us over the past 18 years.

“It was more than just a refurbishment – it was a celebration and investment into our community, our journey and our future.”

The store, which officially reopened on 15 March 2025, now runs 20 clinics a week, offering NHS and private eye tests, contact lens services, emergency eye care appointments and full audiology care including hearing checks and wax removal.
