A pair of loved-up Asian small-clawed otters at WWT London Wetland Centre have been treated to some special Valentine’s Day enrichment, designed to celebrate the season of love.
Honey and Tod, two of the centre’s much-loved resident otters, were presented with a cardboard love heart decorated with the message “Otterly in love at WWT”. Coated in fish oil, the enrichment sparked immediate curiosity as the pair sniffed, explored and investigated their unusual Valentine’s gift.
The otters receive daily enrichment at feeding times, encouraging natural behaviours such as foraging, exploring and problem-solving. This themed treat was an extra special addition to mark Valentine’s Day.
Calvin Allen, Grounds and Living Collections Manager at WWT London Wetland Centre, said: “Tod and Honey are a wonderful example of how enrichment helps keep our animals active, engaged and displaying their natural behaviours.
Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to provide something a little different, and it’s been lovely to see them so curious and clearly enjoying their heart-shaped surprise. We hope it brings a smile to everyone who comes to visit.”
Honey, the braver of the two, wasted no time in racing over to inspect the heart straight away, while Tod initially held back cautiously before gaining confidence and joining in with the fun.
Tod and Honey were introduced at WWT London Wetland Centre on Boxing Day in 2018, and the pair have been enjoying their retirement years together ever since, delighting visitors with their playful personalities and close bond.
Visitors hoping to meet the otterly adorable couple can find Tod and Honey at WWT London Wetland Centre, open daily from 10am to 4.30pm. Daily otter talks take place at 11am and 2pm.
