The London Stand Up Paddling Open, part of the APP World Tour 2022, is returning to Canary Wharf next month from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 18th September.
The 2022 championship promises to be the best yet, and fans of the sport will be looking forward to watching world class paddle pros race in Middle Dock and down the Thames towards Wood Wharf as they compete for coveted event title.
This year Canary Wharf is encouraging everyone to get involved, providing plenty of paddleboard action for visitors across the weekend at Middle Dock on Friday and Saturday, and Wood Wharf on Sunday. Free sessions include introductory paddle lessons for beginners, kids’ and teens’ sessions, yoga and pilates lessons on the water and open racing for all ages and abilities. There will also be a full social schedule across key venues in Canary Wharf.
The races will kick off with the APP Nautical Mile event in Canary Wharf’s Middle Dock on Wednesday 14th September that will see corporate teams take part in a dynamic heat elimination relay race format totally 1.8km (1 Nautical Mile) per Team. Paddle fans can enjoy introductory sessions and SUP Yoga on on Friday 16th September, while on Saturday 17th September the Canary Wharf waterways will be transformed in an arena for the APP World Tour Sprint Race. Viewers can witness the worlds best SUP athletes battle it out in an all-exciting sprint tournament, with the World Title up for grabs.
The event will finish on Sunday 18th September, starting with the always thrilling APP Pro Race from Battersea to Wood Wharf including a portage over from the River Thames into Canary Wharf. After the Pros have made their way down the Thames, Canary Wharf and the APP World tour are calling for all ages and abilities to partake in Paddle for the Oceans through South Dock and North Dock. The event is a global 2.5km paddle challenge that unites thousands of paddle enthusiasts in a show of solidarity for the oceans, and the APP pledges to donate 50% of all proceeds to ocean-related initiatives and charities.
Visitors can make the most of the weekend at Canary Wharf by enjoying many of the activities available around the Estate. This includes free minigolf at Montgomery Square, Open Water Swimming at Middle Dock when the paddleboarding pros aren’t in the water and for those looking to watch more sport, the Summer Screens at Canada Square Park and Union Square will be showing the most exciting games, races, and championships throughout the season.
Lucie Moore, Associate Director of Arts & Events, Canary Wharf Group, said: “This is an exciting time for Canary Wharf as we welcome back the APP World Tour. With the Championship now in London for its third year running, we’re delighted to host the competition and provide a weekend of paddleboarding and fun for friends and families to enjoy. On top of that, there will be plenty to keep busy with over the weekend between art exhibitions, five shopping malls and brand new restaurant openings including Emilia’s Crafted Pasta, Caravan, Hawksmoor and MMy Wood Wharf.”
