Peabody is asking talented young Londoners to work with them on social and community projects in the capital.
Youngsters between 18-25 will have the opportunity to gain a qualification and invaluable skills, helping them drive positive change in their communities and take their first steps on the career ladder.
As Peabody Advisors, they will be given leadership and influencing training as well as opportunities to have their say on how Peabody engages with younger residents in communities across London and beyond. They will also work towards a Level 3 qualification and go on to receive funding towards a professional qualification of their choice.
Once they complete the Peabody Advisors programme, they can also apply to join the Peabody Young Leaders programme where they are given a £500 grant towards a project of their choice that will benefit their local area.
Loren, 21 from Waltham Forest completed both the Peabody Advisors and Young Leaders programme and has just started her first job in HR.
Loren said: “After signing up to the Peabody Young Leaders programme, I decided to focus my social action project on mentoring and supporting other young people. One of my mentees was a young person who was really struggling to find a job. Together we worked on a job hunting approach, CV and cover letter. When she applied for her next job, she got it the following week! It felt amazing to help someone and was absolutely a highlight of the project for me.
“I’ve gained a lot of independence, confidence and trust in myself taking part in this programme. I now know what I am good at and this has helped me figure out what to do next.”
Maryam, 23 from Camden completed the Peabody Advisors and Young Leaders programme creating a mentorship scheme connecting young working-class BIPOC people with professionals across London.
Maryam said: “I completed the Young Leaders programme earlier this year which empowered me to voice my thoughts and opinions. I later completed the Peabody Young Ambassador programme which meant I could access funding for a mural project that I led in Tower Hamlets.
“The mural was a way to recognise the hard work done by people who work in the NHS, particularly during the pandemic. I led 15 young people to design and paint the mural that celebrates the 200 nationalities of the NHS. More than 100 community members have visited the mural as well as the Mayor of Tower Hamlets.”
Stephen Burns, Peabody’s Executive Director Care and Communities, said: “We know that there are very talented young people who can play an important role in shaping their communities for future generations. We want to continue to engage with these young people supporting them with training, funding and qualifications to further their career and deepen their impact on their communities.”
Each year, Peabody works with hundreds of young people, helping them develop vital leadership and communication skills, encouraging and empowering them to become forces of positive change in their communities.
