Cramer St Gallery presents Alan Chapman: Unfiltered, a major photography exhibition revealing rare, intimate portraits of cultural icons captured before the age of social media, PR control and digital filters.
Cramer St Gallery announces Alan Chapman: Unfiltered, a solo exhibition of black-and-white photography by celebrated British photographer Alan Chapman, running from 4th to 8th March, 2026. Curated by Culturalee Founder Lee Sharrock, the exhibition brings together a powerful selection of images spanning Chapman’s three-decade career documenting some of the most influential figures in music, film, fashion and art. Shot in a pre-Instagram era, the photographs offer a rare, unguarded view behind the velvet rope, capturing celebrities with authenticity, intimacy and emotional depth.
Alan Chapman: Unfiltered features striking black-and-white portraits of some of the most influential figures in music, film, fashion, and art. Chapman’s lens has captured Freddie Mercury, Amy Winehouse, Kate Moss, Mick Jagger, Madonna, Jack Nicholson, Sophia Loren, Courtney Love, Liam Gallagher, Boy George, and Lady Gaga, among many others.
Photographed in a pre-Instagram era, before PR teams, curated feeds and digital filters, these images reveal celebrities as instinctive, spontaneous human beings. Moments of charisma, vulnerability, defiance, and joy unfold naturally, creating an intimacy that feels increasingly radical today. With many of the subjects now gone, the photographs also carry a profound sense of cultural memory and loss.
“Alan Chapman has a rare ability to distil rock ’n’ roll spirit and personality into a single frame through his lens. His iconic images of celebrities from the worlds of music, film and fashion offer a powerful counterpoint to today’s hyper-edited, algorithm-driven imagery. Celebrity Unfiltered reminds viewers of a time when fame was raw, fleeting, and thrillingly real.” Curator Lee Sharrock
FRAME is the culmination of 30 years photographing the rich and famous at legendary late-night venues in London and Los Angeles. The book features many of Chapman’s favourite images and is available during the exhibition, priced at £45. The foreword to FRAME is written by US actor Adrian Grenier (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada), who says: “I have my own copy and it sits well with my entire art collection. I love it.”
The exhibition has been made possible through the support of Cramer St Gallery Founding Director Christina Zahra, produced by CMJZ Arts and with artistic direction by Mariya Boyko.
Alan Chapman: Unfiltered is at Cramer Street Gallery, London from 4th to 8th March, 2026. There will be a book signing at the gallery on Sunday 8th March between 12-4pm.
