The Piccadilly Lights has a long history as the nation’s noticeboard. Today, for the first time, Londoners were transported on a journey through time to celebrate the history of the world-famous Piccadilly Lights during a special takeover (27 August 2024).
For five minutes, advertising on the Lights paused whilst the screen came alive with some of the many milestone moments marked on the Lights since the 1930s.
Highlights included footage of the Lights uniting post-war Britain, the King’s Coronation and one-of-a-kind brand experiences that continue to dominate Piccadilly Circus today.
Landsec, which purchased the Piccadilly Lights in 1968, has been reimagining cities, supercharging communities and enriching lives for 80 years. Its story started in 1944 with three properties and unlimited ambitions that continue to drive its people and business today.
Now, to celebrate its 80th year, Landsec is reflecting on how its places, including the Piccadilly Lights, have played an integral part in the nation’s history and the future to come.
Bruce Findlay, managing director – retail at Landsec said: “Piccadilly has undoubtedly evolved over the years but the Lights has long played a role in creating lasting memories at key moments in the nation’s history. It acted as a symbol of hope uniting post-war Britain, over the course of the pandemic it broadcast messages of positivity and, earlier this month, became a meeting point for Olympians and their families.
“Piccadilly Lights will continue to bring communities together to celebrate and pay tribute to the things that matter to them most. Today’s takeover encapsulates what has made this place special to so many people throughout history, whilst looking ahead to its exciting future.”
