President and CEO of Marriott International Anthony Capuano receives an honorary doctorate from UWL

The University of West London (UWL) has awarded President and CEO of Marriott International Anthony Capuano an Honorary Doctor of Letters in recognition of his passion for and dedication to the hospitality and travel industry.

Anthony presides over the world’s largest hospitality company and some of the most iconic brands in travel – nearly 8,900 properties across 141 countries and territories and over 30 brands. It also has the travel industry’s largest customer loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy, with over 203 million members.

Prior to becoming CEO in February 2021, Anthony was Group President of Global Development, Design and Operations Services where he led the strategic unit growth of all of Marriott’s brands while overseeing the global design team as well as Marriott’s global operating standards and protocols.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration at Cornell University, Anthony joined Marriott in 1995 and has been instrumental in its growth, including the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in 2016. He began his career as part of the Market Planning and Feasibility team, before moving into development and operational roles.

Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for McDonald’s Corporation and Save Venice, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving the artistic heritage of Venice, Italy.

“It has been a privilege to watch Tony’s meteoric rise through the ranks of Marriott to become CEO,” said UWL’s Chancellor Laurence Geller CBE as he presented the award. “He is devoted his professional life to our industry, and he truly loves and is passionate about it. His passion is infectious. It motivates all with whom he interacts.”

“On the occasion of my daughter’s graduation last year I shared one piece of advice: I told her to set goals that are just beyond her reach and work tirelessly to achieve them,” said Anthony to the UWL graduands.

“Lean into the values that resonate with you with the most and keep them close throughout your careers,” he continued. “Doing so will help you find places where your work is meaningful, and they will serve as a true north star for you whether times are good or challenging.”
