Professor Bernadine Idowu joins prestigious Fellowship of Academy of Medical Sciences

The Academy of Medical Sciences has elected Professor Bernadine Idowu to join their prestigious Fellowship of researchers. One of 54 exceptional biomedical and health scientists to be newly elected as a Fellow, Bernadine is Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the School of Medicine and Biosciences at the University of West London (UWL).

The independent, expert voice of biomedical and health research in the UK, the Academy of Medical Sciences seeks to nurture the next generation of scientists and shape research and health policy in the UK and worldwide. Its mission is to create an open and progressive research sector that improves health for everyone. 

The new Fellows have been recognised for their remarkable contributions to advancing medical science, groundbreaking research discoveries and translating developments into benefits for patients and the wider public.

Professor Idowu is the Co-Chair of the MRC Black in Biomedical Science Research Advisory Group that brings together academics, researchers, and practitioners from Black heritage backgrounds across UK biomedical research. In 2023 MRC committed 3.7 million towards supporting activities including outreach to Black students at both secondary school and university level, paid summer internships, networking, and early-career researcher transitioning from postdoctoral scientists or researchers to becoming an academic or a principal investigator.

Professor Idowu comments:

“I am deeply honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. I am grateful for the recognition of my leadership in diversifying the Biomedical Science curriculum at UWL alongside leading various initiatives including my annual national Black in Biomedical Science undergraduate conference, which has been supported by the Academy of Medical Science since launching at UWL in 2023. I look forward to supporting the Academy’s work in promoting excellence in diversifying medical science.”

Professor Idowu and the other new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on Wednesday 9 July.
