Raw Sewage to be Diverted into Thames for Six Weeks “During or After Rain”

The £4.5 billion Thames Tideway “super sewer” will divert storm overflows, including untreated sewage, directly into the Thames for six weeks from October 28th,
a notice has revealed.

During periods of rain, the diversion will see rain water and sewage released by Blackfriars, and flow east towards Southwark bridge and beyond.

The Port of London Authority, which oversees activity in the Thames, has published the notice advising mariners of the impact on currents in the water.

This comes after it was reported that sewage dumping had doubled to 40 incidents last year in Southwark-based outflow stations.

Commenting, Southwark Liberal Democrat Deputy Group Leader Cllr Rachel Bentley said:

“It’s 2024, not 1824. It’s totally unacceptable for raw sewage to be dumped anywhere, but it’s frankly embarrassing for it to happen in the centre of our capital city. The Liberal Democrats received a huge national mandate in the recent General Election on this issue, and we will continue to hold water companies to account to end the sewage scandal.”
