As part of this year’s Ask About Asthma Week (8th to 11th September), Tiny Medical Apps (TMA) invited schools across South East London to take part in a creative poster competition, encouraging young people to raise awareness about asthma management and the importance of tools like the Digital Health Passport.
Asthma attacks and mortality in London are above European averages and demand on primary and urgent and emergency care (UEC) services has increased significantly in the last year.
The Digital Health Passport (DHP) is a free, NHS-funded app that is easy to use and allows young people to manage their asthma with inhaler technique videos, medication reminders and air quality alerts.
After careful judging by a panel that included members of TMA and senior colleagues from NHS South East London Integrated Care Board (ICB), three winners were selected:
1st Place: Joanne Ayodele, Bexley Grammar School
Joanne’s vibrant poster combined step-by-step inhaler instructions with a powerful message:
“Breath Easy, Play Hard.”
Featuring a basketball player using their inhaler mid-game, the design showed that asthma shouldn’t stop young people from doing what they love.
Prize: £200 gift card + £500 for Bexley Grammar School to spend on PE and sports equipment.
2nd Place: Sweety Roy, Oaklands School
Sweety’s colourful hand-drawn poster highlighted key asthma risk factors, from pollen and pollution to exercise and cold air. She also created a clear first-aid guide using the acronym
ASTHMA
, reminding people how to assess, treat, and help someone during an asthma attack.
Prize: £80 gift card.
3rd Place: A student from Bonus Pastor College
This creative entry illustrated how to use inhalers correctly, explained the importance of having an asthma action plan, and promoted the role of the
Digital Health Passport app
in managing symptoms. The combination of artwork and practical advice made the poster both eye-catching and informative.
Prize: £50 gift card.
Each of the winning posters showed exceptional creativity, originality, and a clear message about how young people can take control of their asthma.
Speaking about the competition, chair of the judging panel Saira Arif said:
“The quality of the entries was outstanding. It’s inspiring to see how young people are helping spread awareness about asthma in such creative ways. Their posters will play an important role in reminding others how to manage asthma effectively.”
All three winning designs will be promoted during Ask About Asthma Week to help spread awareness and encourage young people to feel confident in managing their condition.
Dr Greg Burch Joint CEO & Clinical Director at Tiny Medical Apps added: “We were delighted with the response, receiving a wide range of inspiring and thoughtful entries from students. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all participating schools for their enthusiasm and effort in making this competition such a success.”
