Barratt Redrow has partnered with national children’s mental health charity Place2Be to develop a new and improved sensory garden at The Crescent Primary School in Croydon.
Place2Be is a children’s mental health charity that provides counselling and emotional support nationwide. The charity has been working closely with Barratt Redrow and The Crescent Primary School to provide crucial mental health support to the children.
Following an initial visit to The Crescent Primary School, Barratt Redrow and Place2Be were keen to enhance the school’s wellbeing facilities. Starting with the renovation of the underused available green space within the school’s grounds, they were able to create a sensory space to promote interactive play and learning, both proven to offer significant mental health benefits to children.
The sensory garden includes a range of textured plants, flowers and natural materials designed to engage the five senses. New seating areas, planters, and play features encourage pupils to explore, reflect, and connect with nature in a calm and welcoming setting.
Barratt Redrow not only created the plans for the new sensory garden but also volunteered time to carry out the necessary works to bring the new sensory garden to life. The team have also identified future opportunities to support the school, including repainting external play areas to create a more welcoming space for pupils and staff to relax and de-stress during the school day.
Verity Denman, Head of School at The Crescent Primary School, comments: “We are incredibly grateful to Place2Be and Barratt Redrow for their generous support, which has created an on-site dedicated mental health facility. Some of our children at Crescent Primary School did not have access to a garden prior to this renovation, so we are glad that they now have the opportunity for sensory planting and more focused interactive play, which will bring massive mental health benefits to them. Through their time and support, Barratt Redrow and Place2Be have helped us improve and get the space ready for the children to use after their half-term break.”
Danny Masters, Operations Director at Barratt London adds: “It has been an incredible opportunity to work closely with Place2Be and The Crescent Primary School on such a rewarding project. Placemaking is at the heart of what we do at Barratt Redrow, so creating a space like this within the school’s grounds is an example of how important it is to improve the communities around our surrounding developments.”
