Pupils and staff at South Norwood Primary School part of The Pioneer Academy, got into the spirit of World Book Day by dressing up as their favourite book characters yesterday (7 March).
Staff also held a fashion show to parade their outfits during a whole school assembly which heralded a day of celebrations for the literary awareness day.
The fun included inviting parents in to a Year 1 masterclass in phonics lesson and children in the school’s Enhanced Learning Provision welcoming in their parents for a crafts and storytelling workshop.
Year 1 also visited Waterstones book store to select their World Book Day book with their free £1 voucher and met an author who read one of their stories aloud to them.

Meanwhile, teachers swapped classes to read a story to a different class – Year 5 went to reception and Year 1 to Year 6.

Melody Berthoud, Head Teacher at South Norwood Primary School, said:
“At South Norwood Primary, we are passionate about reading. World Book Day is a great opportunity to raise the profile of reading for pleasure from a young age and to share the enjoyment that a good book can bring.
“By combining fun activities like the staff fashion show and dressing up with sharing their reading lessons with parents, we aimed to put across the message that reading and a love of reading can be shared with everyone and, crucially, is great fun.
“Our whole community had a wonderful day and we hope the children were inspired to read even more at school and at home and share their favourite books with their parents and carers and each other.”
World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and shared reading. The aim of the day is to promote reading for pleasure as this has a positive impact on the life chances of children.
World Book Day has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading and is marked in over 100 countries around the world.
