ONE of Clapham’s longest-serving retailers is celebrating 30 years of helping the community.
The Specsavers store in St John’s Road opened its doors in 1995, and has since invested in local staff, state-of-the-art technology, and served emergency customers throughout the pandemic.
Among special guests at the locally owned and run store were Specsavers co-founder, Dame Mary Perkins, and Councillor Rosemarie Birchall, Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth.
In addition, retail director Millie Bryant invited South London’s community choir, London Sings! who sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the invited guests while a caricature artist captured the essence of the day and a lasting memory.
Millie says: ‘We’re thrilled to welcome Dame Mary and the Deputy Mayor of Wandsworth to our celebration, as this makes it even more special.
‘It’s incredible that Specsavers Clapham Junction has been serving the local community since 1995. So much has changed in terms of retail, optics and hearing care during that time, so we are also celebrating innovation too.’
Long-standing customers, some of whom have been loyal to Specsavers Clapham Junction since it opened 30 years ago, joined in the party atmosphere which continued throughout the day, with a DJ playing a selection of tunes from the mid-90’s.
As keen supporters of the homelessness charity, Crisis, the directors organised some fundraising on the day too with London Sings! performing song requests in exchange for donations from customers and passers-by.
Specsavers Clapham Junction customers can benefit from state-of-the-art pre-room testing diagnostic equipment, including a visual fields analyser and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) examination. The OCT, which is hospital grade advanced diagnostic, eye-scanning equipment, helps detect serious eye conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, up to four years earlier than traditional methods, and costs just an additional £5.
The added benefit of the scan is that each customer’s OCT images can be stored, with any changes being observed over time – a real benefit to the monitoring of someone’s overall eye health.
Specsavers Clapham Junction also offers Minor Eye Care Services (MECS) providing enhanced services, such as the management of red eyes, flashes and floaters and dry eyes and offer support to the local GPs.
The store has a dedicated audiology centre, which offers a soundproof booth for customers to have their hearing checked, coupled with the latest micro-suction equipment for wax removal.
Specsavers Clapham Junction is open seven days a week. It has 10 test rooms, dedicated diagnostic testing areas and specific contact lens stations offering enhanced facilities to customers.
