LIZ Truss and the Tories have been backed to recover – by Boris Johnson’s dad.
Stanley Johnson told GB News the party needed to focus on everything they’d achieved.
Speaking to Mark Dolan he said: “The Conservative did deliver some really good things. It got us out of COVID. It led the way in Ukraine, and it really did set an environmental agenda, which was extremely important. Where are we now? Okay, there’s been a little bit of a hiccup over the last few weeks, but the dip has subsided. And what we need to do is to focus on the 2019 manifesto, which nobody can say did not have the endorsement of the British people.
“That’s what my advice would be to Jeremy Hunt. Remember where we came from folks, which was the 2019 manifesto. I think Jeremy Hunt has a sense of where the centre lies and I think if anything, this is a Conservative, grab for the centre which I think will work well.”
Meanwhile Ann Widdicombe has also urged the party not to ditch Liz Truss while admitting Jeremy Hunt is now “effectively running the country”.
She told Mark Dolan: “The threat the Conservatives face is from themselves. The Conservative parliamentary party is ungovernable and panics at the drop of a hat. It is already saying ‘get rid of Liz Truss’. But if you put in a new Prime Minister what’s going to happen when problems arise and the party goes into another panic?
“Now, the membership voted for a particular set of policies which Liz tried to introduce immediately and she should have handled it differently. But those were the policies that she was elected to deliver. And she hasn’t been allowed to do so.
“Jeremy Hunt is now effectively running the country not Liz Truss and we have Penny Mourdant standing at the despatch box. Neither of these people managed to come anywhere near Truss in the leadership election. They (Tory MPs) don’t appear to remember that.
“I do sincerely hope that the party can be persuaded to stick with Liz because I didn’t actually see a new leader solving the problem. Just changing the leader every time there’s a problem isn’t actually the answer.”
