Staying safe on your drive to work

There are plenty of hazards out there for regular commuters. Whether you’re driving into the office or heading out in your work van, it’s important to stay safe. Below, we explore how you can look after yourself on your drive to work.

Fatigue

One of the main dangers when you’re driving to work is fatigue. It’s well known that being tired can dull your reactions and potentially lead to more accidents. If you know you’re driving to work, try and get a good night’s sleep beforehand. However, if you can feel yourself getting tired on the road it can be worth stopping to take a break.

Plan your route

If you get lost on your drive to work or to a job as a mobile mechanic it can lead to danger. You can easily get distracted when you’re trying to work out your route on the go. Ideally, you should avoid this by planning your route in advance. If it’s a new office then you should plan the night before. Or if you’re sent out on a task, you should set your sat-nav while you’re stationary – even if you’re in a rush.

The vehicle

Your vehicle is important too. You need something that you’re comfortable driving. Plus, the vehicle needs to be capable of operating in any weather conditions. If you’re a mechanic, for instance, then you’ll need a heavy-duty van to help you get out to jobs in any weather.

Other road users

You can never predict how other road users might behave. As such, you should always be cautious. If you see someone speeding up right behind you, it’s best to safely let them through. You never know when someone might make a mistake so it’s best to drive cautiously in the mornings.

Weather conditions

Weather conditions can make the roads a more dangerous place. Icy or wet conditions can be extremely difficult to drive in. If the roads are hazardous, ensure that you leave extra space between vehicles and make more of an allowance for an emergency stop.

Sometimes though, an accident is unavoidable no matter how safe you are. In this situation, if you’re driving around as a mobile mechanic, it’s important to have quality mobile mechanic insurance to limit the financial damage and give yourself peace of mind.
