Over 95 percent of children in Sutton have secured a preferred secondary school place this year.

National Secondary Offer Day is an annual day where parents, carers and children find out what secondary school places they have been accepted into. This follows on from the deadline of 31 October for secondary school place applications.

Sutton has outperformed other London boroughs for the number of pupils getting preferred school places this September.

Sutton performed two percent higher than the London average with 96 percent of pupils being offered a place at one of their preferred schools, compared to 94 percent of children across the rest of London.

A total of 91 percent of Sutton pupils were offered a place at one of their top three choices of secondary school, with over 73 percent getting into their first preference school, both also higher than London averages. This is according to figures released on National Secondary School Offer Day by the Pan London Admissions Board.

Councillor Jenny Batt, Lead Member for Education at Sutton Council said;

“It is so important to set our children up to transition into young people who can meet their full potential and National Secondary Offer Day is a key part of this journey. It is fantastic to see that this year over 95 percent of pupils have secured a place at one of their preferred options. We know this is a busy time for parents and carers and hopefully this news reassures them. Strong working relationships between the Council and primary and secondary schools are crucial to enabling pupils, parents and carers to effectively transition between these stages. A special thank you to all the staff and support staff across the borough who continue to work tirelessly with our children and young people – particularly when transitioning between primary and secondary places.”

A number of local Head Teachers share their views on what this means for local students.

Philip McCullagh, Head Teacher at The John Fisher School said;

“We are so fortunate to have such a range of high performing schools in the Local Authority of Sutton. The strong relationships between the Primary and Secondary schools certainly supports a smooth transition process for our young people. There is also a strong relationship between all of the Secondary schools and this established collegial approach definitely benefits all of the students in our schools as well as our local community. This close working relationship between the schools in Sutton is not something that can be underestimated and it is unsurprising that the secondary schools in the area experience such success and are therefore popular with young people, parents and carers.”
Jamie Bean, Headmaster at Wallington County Grammar School said;

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming our next cohort of Wallington County Grammar School students. Congratulations to all on National Offer Day for securing places at some of the best schools in the country, right here in Sutton. We are proud to be part of a borough that delivers such a fantastic education to so many young people in so many different schools.”
