Sutton’s A-level and BTec students* look set for success with initial A Level results out today (Thursday 17 August) showing a year on year trend of rising achievement across the borough.
This year, grading standards return to pre-pandemic standards, making a direct comparison against the previous year difficult.
Sutton schools have achieved a preliminary average A or A* pass grade of 43% – well above the national figure of 27% achieving A or A* grades in England – and a preliminary average A* – C pass rate of 85% against a national average of 75%.
Local students continue to perform extremely well, and schools across the borough have been celebrating their outstanding results.
Nathan Cole, Chair of the Sutton Secondary Headteachers’ Forum, said: “We heartily congratulate the class of 2023 on their results. These young people were unable to sit their GCSE examinations in 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and somewhat inevitably there has been an even greater degree of nervous excitement as today approached. Their collective achievements are therefore all the more impressive set against the backdrop of the challenges they have faced. We do of course recognise that preparation for success is a team effort and it is important to acknowledge the huge contribution made by school staff in partnership with patient and supportive parents and carers. For those who perhaps did not achieve as they had hoped, take heart. Be assured that there is more than one path to happiness and success!”
Councillor Marian James, Chair of Sutton Council’s People Committee, said: “Well done to all our Sutton A Level BTec students who have shown such determination and resilience over the past couple of years of educational upheaval due to the pandemic.
“I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to our amazing teaching community across all our schools, who have helped and supported our students, in order to help them achieve and stay focused on their education.”
This year, Councillor Rob Beck, Deputy Chair of the People Committee, visited Glenthorne High students to get their reactions to their results, and to chat to them about their plans and ambitions for the future.
Doctor Sarah Peacock, Head Teacher at Glenthorne High, reacted to their results: “As a school, we are immensely proud of our Year 13 students who have excelled in their first ever public exams. Their hard work, determination, and resilience have culminated in outstanding results that will provide a strong foundation for their future endeavours.
“These results reflect not only the student’s academic excellence but also the unwavering support and guidance of our dedicated teachers. We celebrate their success and look forward to witnessing the positive impact they will undoubtedly make in the World.”
