GCSE students in Sutton celebrated exam success yesterday (24 August) with 86.2% of students achieving at least 5 GCSEs graded at 4 or above.
Initial results for Sutton show:
84.5% of pupils in Sutton schools achieved grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
89.8% of pupils achieved 4+ in English, and 86.7% achieved 4+ in Maths compared with a national average of 64.7% and 61.1% respectively.
Councillor Marian James, Chair of Sutton Council’s People Committee, said: “Sutton’s GCSE students have achieved another fantastic set of results. They have faced a lot of upheaval in the past three years and these results are a testament to their commitment to their education.
“Sutton’s results are well above the national averages and reflect the high quality of schools and teaching that we have here in the borough. I would like to congratulate everyone – our students, our families, as well as our outstanding teaching community who have supported our students with such dedication and passion.”
Yesterday, Sutton Council joined staff and students at Harris Academy Sutton, judged Outstanding by Ofsted earlier this year, to celebrate their results. Having just recently opened, this is the first year that the Academy has received GCSE results.
The Academy, located within the London Cancer Hub development, is the UK’s first Passivhaus secondary school and the largest Passivhaus school in the UK. The building has already won several architectural awards since it opened and based on the latest GCSE results, the schools award winning status looks set to continue.
James Fisher, Head Teacher at Harris Academy Sutton, said: “This is our first ever year of GCSE results so we wanted to blaze a trail. But even so, these have gone beyond our most demanding expectations. Our students have, across the cohort, done exceptionally well.
“In every subject, students have worked incredibly hard and done themselves justice with some outstanding results which we are confident will place us high in the national tables for results.
“I’d like to thank my colleagues across the Academy for their hard work and determination and to the families of Year 11s for the support they have given them in preparing for their exams.
“We are all absolutely delighted and look forward to welcoming our students back to our Sixth Form in September where they will continue to enjoy an excellent education. We are building something amazing here and it is so pleasing to see our plans come to fruition.”
