A charity supporting young people to reach their full potential through sports and personal development, have received a £1,500 grant to provide much-needed support.

Fight For Peace was able to celebrate after receiving a grant, which provide a fun and positive environment for young people to get active and socialise during the day whilst schools are closed.

The charity applied to the Tesco Stronger Starts scheme, which awards grants to charities and community organisations, and were successful in winning the maximum amount to deliver boxing and martial arts classes, games and activities to promote physical fitness, and nutritious meals.

Spokesperson from the charity, Lee Hemmings, said: “Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive place for young people to explore their talents and develop their skills so they can be champions in the ring and in life. We achieve this by delivering a powerful combination of boxing and martial arts with a range of essential youth services.”

“Many people live in poverty and are unable to bring in legitimate income to support themselves let alone afford ‘leisure’ activities. We know that serious youth violence and knife crime is a concern in Newham and the Twilights Holiday Programme aims to reduce the risks of involvement of vulnerable children and young people.”

The Stronger Starts scheme, in partnership with the Groundwork charity, aims to support many Tower Hamlets community projects and good causes in the coming years, with thousands of pounds to give away.

Claire De Silva, Head of Community at Tesco, said: “We’re delighted that we can help groups and charities like School Holiday Club. Stronger Starts invites our customers to use their blue tokens to vote for local schemes they feel will benefit children and young people, and it’s so good to see the impact that the funding makes.”
