Tesco Woolwich Extra is helping rough sleepers by fundraising for a life-changing charity that provides essential support for anyone needing its help.

Woolwich Service Users Project (WSUP) is a grassroots charity that provides practical and emotional support to those seeking help in the community.

It is open three days a week and supplies hot meals, haircuts and showers. It relies on donations to provide this essential care.

Prakash Dhamala, community champion at Woolwich Extra store on Grand Depot Road, said: “I am thrilled to have raised so much money for WUSP. They are such an important charity to the Woolwich community.

“I put myself through various challenges so I could experience just a fraction of what the rough sleepers in Woolwich do. I walked on hot coals and broken glass without shoes, slept rough and spoke to my peers to hear their story.”

On the evening, Prakash gave out hot meals and goodie bags with essential items such as a toothbrush and blankets.
The store raised more than £600 for the charity and the team is working closely with the council to see what more can be done for the community.

Darek Karwacki, WSUP’s CEO, said: “Rough sleeping is harmful. We care about our local community and Tesco’s contribution will help us to continue our work with people at risk of, or experiencing, homelessness in Woolwich”
