The Lord Mayor of the City of London Alderman Professor Michael Mainelli is asking people to join him on Friday 7 June to abseil 215 meters down The Leadenhall Building. Raising vital funds for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, those who sign up will tackle the highest descent yet while seeing the Square Mile from a unique vantage point.
It’s not just City-based adrenaline junkies who can join, The Abseil Challenge is open to anyone over 18 and reasonably fit and healthy – with no previous experience needed. Those who take part are asked to commit to fundraising for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal – helping in its aim to ‘Create A Better City For All’. As well as its four thought leadership initiatives – Inclusive, Healthy, Skilled and Fair –The Appeal supports charities MQ Mental Health Research, Homewards and National Numeracy.
By taking on the dizzying height of the 47th floor of the iconic ‘Cheesegrater’, nicknamed on account of its sloping profile, each abseiler will be doing their bit to ensure these fantastic causes continue to deliver ground-breaking programmes and find solutions to some of London’s most pressing societal issues including homelessness, low numeracy, financial inclusion and ending the stigma of mental health in the workplace.
Also taking part this year will be The Lady Mayoress, Elisabeth Mainelli, the first Lady Mayoress ever to take to a harness for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal; and a host of City VIPs. All participants of the Abseil Challenge will be guided by a team of abseiling experts, on hand every step of the way to show everyone the ropes before the descent which is accompanied by an instructor.
The Lord Mayor of the City of London Michael Mainelli says; “Come and join on us on 7 June to see the beautiful skyline of the City of London as you abseil down the iconic Leadenhall Building. This year, I’ll be abseiling with my wife Lady Mayoress Elisabeth Mainelli and encourage anyone in the Square Mile and across London to sign up and join us. If you are daunted by heights, don’t be put off as you’ll be looked after by professionals who will ensure your abseil is exhilarating. You’ll also be raising money for the Appeal in our aim to help millions of Londoners thrive.”
Adam Goldin, Head of C C Land UK, said: “Giving back is an important part of our philosophy and The Lord Mayor’s Appeal is an excellent charity with an ethos that we are pleased to support – creating a better city for all. We are looking forward to hosting the event in June and encourage anyone keen to take part to sign up.”
