To mark National Tree Week, the Royal Borough of Greenwich has planted new trees in all 23 wards across the borough.
Councillors joined local residents and ‘Friends of Parks’ groups to help deliver the specially bred Elm trees to their new homes.
The newly planted trees bring the council one step closer to their target of planting 5000 new trees across the borough by 2026.
Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said, “We’ve committed to delivering 5000 new trees across Royal Greenwich and we’re already over half-way there.
“Our parks and open spaces are so valuable to our communities. They provide a place for people to get active, spend time outdoors in nature and socialise.
“We want to make them the best they can be for our residents. Planting more trees increases biodiversity and protects local wildlife and will also help us to reach our target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.”
National Tree Week 2023 runs from 25 November to 5 December and is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration. The nationwide event encourages people across the country to plant thousands of new trees to mark the start of tree planting season.
The council’s Parks Team will be busy this winter planting 500 more trees across the borough.
