The council has welcomed fresh TfL investment for our long-championed campaign to extend the DLR Thamesmead as we reach the end of Better Transport Week.
Transport for London was awarded cash in last week’s spending review which will, in part, go towards extending the DLR – a big step for a project the council has long lobbied for. We’re encouraging residents to now get involved in TfL’s consultation on the next stage of planning.
Extending the DLR unlocks land in Thamesmead for 10,000 new homes, which would be a huge boost. It would also create new jobs and neighbourhoods, complete with the shops and leisure spaces you’d expect to see in an area that benefits from better transport links.
Thamesmead is the only London postcode without a direct rail link. Just like the Elizabeth Line did for Woolwich, we think a new transport hub like the DLR would transform Thamesmead and we’ll continue to work with our partners, the government and the Mayor on its extension.
It comes as we mark Better Transport Week – a national celebration of sustainable ways to travel – and the chance to reaffirm Our Greenwich mission of making it easier, safer and greener to move around the borough.
A spokesperson said: “We know we need to clean up our air and make it easier, greener and safer to move around the borough. That’s why Better Transport Week is important, because it highlights new ways of travel. It’s timely too, as we learnt last week that TfL has had a cash boost towards the potential DLR extension, which is a huge step forward. Residents and business should now feed into TfL’s consultation on what the stations would be like so we keep the project moving.
“In Greenwich we champion sustainable travel all year round, not just for a week. From installing new cycle hangars and improving our cycle network, to investigating bus improvements and better managing our road network, we’re making it as easy as possible to get around Royal Greenwich. We’re also exploring traffic-free school streets, making it easier and safer for children to walk, cycle or scoot to school, and we’re working on Sustainable Streets to help reduce the number of car journeys in our borough and encourage more people to walk, cycle or use public transport.
“If we can make it easier for more people to switch to cleaner ways of getting around, then that’s a win-win. Whether it’s new charging points or filling potholes, there are schemes underway that benefit our residents and businesses no matter how they choose to travel.”
As well as working with our key partners, the Mayor of London, developers and landowners to push for a DLR extension, the council has implemented schemes across the borough to improve how we all move around.
This is alongside work to fix our roads and extend our cycle lanes to make it safer and easier for residents, businesses and visitors.
