Thousands of UK pupils to take part in June week of climate action

Let’s Go Zero is calling on schools across the UK to take part in the Climate Action Countdown 2025 next week – a fun and free week of climate activities from 23–27 June, designed to spark climate confidence and creativity in classrooms – and give schools the chance to win prizes worth over £700.

Following a hugely successful campaign in 2024, which saw 1,761 schools and organisations take part, this year’s Countdown is shaping up to be even bigger. Last year’s activities inspired schools from every corner of the UK, with an incredible 87% of participants saying they would take more climate action as a result.

“The Climate Action Countdown was an outstanding opportunity for our school communities to come together and show leadership in the fight to reduce carbon emissions,” said Lee Hughes, Chief Operating Officer, Peterborough Diocese Education Trust, which took part in last year’s event.

The 2025 Countdown includes 32 exciting pick-and-mix activities co-created by a coalition of leading environmental and education organisations – including EcoSchools, Fairtrade Foundation, Surfers Against Sewage, WRAP, and WWF – covering everything from food and fashion to nature and energy.

Schools taking part can win:

🐦 A WiFi wildlife camera and memory card from Green Feathers
🎓 A Climate CPD training session for staff from Green Schools Project
♻️ Daily prizes for the best pupil photos and videos using #ClimateActionCountdown and tagging @LetsGoZero
The Countdown is fully flexible – a “pick-and-mix” pack of easy-to-use, curriculum-friendly activities that can be slotted into the week however best suits the school. And it all ends with the Great Big Climate Quiz – a laughter and learning Friday challenge that boosts climate knowledge and gives every participant a chance to help their school win the top prizes.

“It’s really fun and interacts with children in the right way to convince them to care about our planet,” said one of last year’s participant pupils from SS Peter and Paul’s Catholic Primary School in Essex.

The event is open to all schools, whether or not they’ve already joined the Let’s Go Zero campaign.

“We know schools are full of energy, creativity and a deep commitment to doing what’s right for people and planet,” said Alex Green, Head of Ashden’s Let’s Go Zero campaign.
“The Climate Action Countdown is all about celebrating that – giving schools simple, joyful tools to help young people lead the way on climate”.

Let’s Go Zero is the national campaign uniting UK schools, colleges and nurseries working to become zero carbon. Led by climate charity Ashden and backed by a coalition of 20 leading environmental and education organisations, the campaign supports schools to take action now and pushes for government support to help all schools reach zero carbon by 2030.

Over 6,500 schools have already joined the movement – representing more than one in five UK schools – showing that a zero carbon future for schools is not only possible, but already happening.
