Time for Chisora and Wilder to retire, says Frank Warren

DEONTAY Wilder and Derek Chisora should both now retire from boxing, according to the promoter Frank Warren.

He said on GB News: “I’ve seen two guys who should now both retire. They’re both in their 40s, and they’re very brave.

“It was entertaining and it was probably colourful to the people who are watching it, because they can’t get out of the way. You know, their resistance, of riding punches and so forth, isn’t there anymore.

“When you get to a certain age in boxing, and especially heavyweights, they’re throwing these big bombs. They’re going to catch up with you. Every punch you take is going to affect you later in life.

“And for me, they’re both very, very entertaining fighters over the years, given they’ve shown what they’re all about, as their hearts concerned, their desire.

“You know, Wilder, former world champion, Derek’s been to the well a few times, never quite did it at the highest level. But they should go on a high.”

Warren also said that Tyson Fury is well-prepared for his fight on Saturday: “He certainly is. I was with him on Saturday for a bit of lunch on Saturday lunchtime. And he’s, I’ve got to be honest, he looks in tremendous, tremendous shape and condition.

“Physically and mentally, he’s looking to put on a performance at Spurs on Saturday. And he’s in with a good fighter in Makhmudov.

“It’s not an easy comeback fight for him. I think the guy stopped 17 people in the first round in his career. He’s a bit of a handful.

“So for Tyson, it’s a big job. But I’ll tell you what, if he mentally gets there, he’s going to put on some performance on Saturday night.”
